    Bonjour

    More composite engine parts
As engines grow in size so do the fans and they can become heavier. The fan blades for the GEnx are manufactured using composite material that makes the blades less dense, therefore lighter in weight. The wide-chord composite fan blades have a titanium shield on the leading edge to protect them against impact damage. The number of fan blades is 18 compared to 22 on the GE90-115B and 36 on the CF6-80C2. This also reduces overall engine weight. GE says the blades are virtually maintenance-free.

*Composite fan blades: Multiple configurations of subscale fan blades have been tested at GE, Snecma Moteurs, and NASA Glenn Research Center. As a result, the GEnx engine will be designed with 18 composite fan blades (down from 22 blades for the GE90.) The fan blade reduction will provide greater efficiency, weight reduction, and lower maintenance costs. Further rig tests will be run later this year and in 2006 with full-scale GEnx composite blades.

    RR !

The Environmental Lightweight Fan (ELF) programme is aimed at introducing a carbon fibre composite fan blade which provides significant advantage for reducing the weight of major components in the gas turbine engine and increasing their operating life.  Reduced weight saves energy and fuel and consequently reduces emissions.  This programme is planned to develop composite fan blade design and manufacturing technologies. The programme initially concentrates on material selection and construction and the development of an automated manufacturing process. A series of progressively evolved and optimised blade designs will be manufactured and evaluated throughout the programme.  The programme started in 2007 and is expected to complete in 2012
The ELF consortium is GKN and Rolls-Royce, support has been provided by a number of leading UK and European universities.

    http://safran-group.com/site-safran/engagements/sponsoring-nautique/les-technologies-de-safran-a-bord/safrans-3d/

Weaving a fan blade in 3-D makes it possible to manufacture larger, more aerodynamically advanced blades without increasing weight. For a 71-inch fan diameter, each 3-D-woven blade weighs about eight pounds. The weight saved comes from the reduced number of blades. The LEAP-X’s fan has 18 blades, whereas the current CFM56-7 (which powers the Boeing 737 family) has 24.

A fan case using the same composite technology is now undergoing rig tests. Engineers expect to save 1,000 pounds on a twin-engine aircraft by moving from metal to 3D-woven composite fan blades and case.

The manufacturing process for this fan blade involves 7,000 needles working on the composite loom and a water jet cutting the fibers. Resin transfer molding (RTM) is the next step in this process by which CFM has produced approximately 300 fan blades.

    --------------------------------------

    Pratt & Whitney !

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/03/31/340187/pw-close-to-deciding-on-gtf-fan-blade-material.html

Pratt & Whitney says it will decide by the third quarter whether to use traditional hollow titanium fan blades or a newly developed hybrid metallic design for its new geared turbofan (GTF) engine.

"We're leaning toward the hybrid metallic blade," Paul Adams, senior vice president of engineering for the Connecticut-based United Technologies subsidiary, tells ATI and Flightglobal.

Along with P&W's internal work on the hybrid metallic blade, which Adams describes as a "metallic structure associated with a composite structure", the company also investigated with its sister company Hamilton Sundstrand a resin transfer molding (RTM) composite design, similar to what GE uses on the GE90 series engines for widebody aircraft and for its new Leap-X1C narrowbody engine, selected by Comac for the C919.

However, Adams says engineers have ruled out the RTM option in part because the hybrid metallic design is "more efficient" due to its thinner leading edges and other features, including better foreign object debris (FOD) resistance.

To date, Adams says P&W has completed 95% of the development work required to make the blade decision, with the fall-back position being traditional titanium fan blades.

    --------------------------

Alors quoi inventer maintenant, hors "Open Rotors"

---------------

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/03/07/354000/cfm-studying-new-weight-savings-for-leap-x-blades.html

    -----------
The General Electric-Snecma joint venture is examining the feasibility of reducing the thickness of the composite blades and fan case for the next-generation narrowbody engine, says Ron Klapproth, LEAP-X programme director.

Internal analysis has confirmed that the current design, which is based on scaling down technology from the widebody-class GEnx-series, is strong enough to pass bird-strike and blade-out tests required to achieve certification, Klapproth says.

By shifting from metal to composite blades, the current design of the 18-blade Leap-X fan reduces overall weight by about 168lb.

To improve the strength, CFM also needed to change the manufacturing process. GEnx blades are fashioned using a two-ply lay-up process. The Leap-X material is manufactured using a 3-dimensional woven resin transfer moulding (RTM) process, improving the blade's strength.

Meanwhile, CFM is building the eCore 2 demonstrator to test Leap-X components. Compared to the eCore 1 rig tests, the new demonstrator adds a second stage to the high pressure turbine. The first dual-spool tests of the low- and high-pressure turbine spools are set to begin later this year.

Snecma has started endurance testing of the 71in-diameter fan derived from the company's Mascot programme.
