Message par Poncho (Admin) Jeu 19 Jan 2012 - 13:51

    Bonjour à tous

    http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story.jsp?id=news/awx/2012/01/19/awx_01_19_2012_p0-415962.xml&headline=EASA%20Demands%20A380%20Wing%20Crack%20Inspections&channel=comm

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is ordering inspections of relatively high-cycle A380s to assess the extent to which a new set of wing cracks are affecting the Airbus fleet.

The inspections and potential repairs could impact A380 operations, although so far the damage prompting the EASA airworthiness directive has been found only on two of nine aircraft inspected. The culprit is an L-shaped bracket that attaches the wing skin to the ribs.

An Airbus wing expert insists it is not a flight safety issue and that both a short-term fix has been identified in cases where cracking is detected, as well as a longer-term fix to avoid the stress cracks occurring in the future. The cracks have been found on the center section of the wing between the two engines.

The EASA directive addresses a similar parts fatigue problem with wing rib feet brackets initially found on a Qantas A380 and later seen on other aircraft. Those hairline cracks were deemed manageable and could be fixed at C-checks. Those cracks were found because the Qantas aircraft (MSN14) suffered an uncontained engine failure, giving engineers an opportunity to closely examine the wing.

The new cracking is slightly different and viewed as more significant, though. It has been seen on two A380s that have been more closely inspected. Originally, damage was found when a customer aircraft underwent a C-check around ten days ago. One of the brackets, rather than showing hairline stress cracks, on its vertical part had a more significant crack, prompting Airbus to notify safety authorities and also launch a wider inspection of nine aircraft at which point evidence of cracking was found on a second aircraft.

A wing has around 30-40 of the L-shaped brackets, so the failure of one is not seen as a safety issue.

Airbus believes the issue was manageable and could have been dealt with at regular C-Checks, but EASA decided to call for an earlier inspection regime. Around a dozen aircraft are likely to be affected. The Airbus official notes that even without the extra attention to the issue caused by the findings on the Qantas aircraft, the cracks would have been found during routine maintenance activity well before becoming a safety issue.

Where cracks are found, the bracket has to be unbolted and a new one spliced into the section. Whether that is a permanent fix, or an interim measure is still being assessed.

The inspection is relatively simple, the wing expert says, requiring drainage of the relevant tanks for a visual inspection. However, the time to drain the tanks likely means an aircraft is out of service at least 24 hours, depending on local safety rules. If a bracket is found to have cracked, it needs immediate replacement, which could take a few days.

As part of the root cause analysis, Airbus instrumented one of its own aircraft to assess whether it had erroneously estimated the loads the wing would see, leading to the cracks. But the aircraft maker determined that was not the case. Instead, it found that the likely culprit is the assembly process, which imparts too much stress on the bracket when the wing skin is attached to the rib. The part itself is not being redesigned, but the assembly process is being changed for the long-term solution.

    A suivre

Singapore Airlines on Jan. 20 started inspecting an Airbus A380 in response to an action by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for operators to examine their A380s for potential cracks in a wing component.

The airline’s spokesman says SIA anticipates that the new inspection regime will in no way disrupt day-to-day operations.

He says SIA has 15 A380s in service, and this in fact is one or two more than it needs to maintain its current A380 flight schedule, so taking one out of service for inspections will not cause disruptions.

The airworthiness directive (AD) covers mainly high-cycle A380s. SIA is the lead operator for the aircraft type. “We have not received the AD yet”, but as a precaution the airline has decided to commence the inspections immediately, says the SIA spokesman, adding that the first inspection has begun.

This AD comes after Airbus alerted EASA it found a new set of cracks affecting L-shaped brackets inside the wing of relatively high-cycle A380s. The cracks are more significant than the hairline cracks earlier discovered.

The two airlines with the most number of relatively high-cycle A380s are the aircraft type’s launch operator SIA and launch customer Qantas Airways.

Inspecting the brackets involves draining the fuel-tanks inside the wing and opening an access panel so one can look inside the wing and do a visual inspection. SIA’s spokesman declines to say how much time it takes to do the inspection, but reiterates that the new inspection regime will have no impact on SIA’s A380 operation.

The spokesman also says the latest type of cracking identified by EASA in no way poses a threat to safety. Each wing has around 2,000 of the L-shaped brackets per wing, so the failure of one is not seen as a safety issue.

----------- De Kaminsky Morrow, FlightGlobal , le lien et l'article --------

European safety regulators have ordered inspection of 20 Airbus A380s to check for wing rib-foot damage, following the discovery of two different forms of cracks in the structure.

The aircraft affected are early-delivery airframes comprising 10 with Singapore Airlines, seven with Emirates, one with Air France and two Airbus test A380s.

In an airworthiness directive the European Aviation Safety Agency has ordered operators to conduct a detailed visual inspection of "certain" wing rib feet, and to report findings to Airbus.

The inspections are required within four days, if the A380 has already carried out 1,800 flights, and within six weeks if it has performed over 1,300 flights.

Any operator discovering cracks in the rib feet are required to contact Airbus for instructions.

EASA's directive follows the initial discovery of rib-foot cracks in a Qantas A380 - the aircraft involved in the November 2010 engine failure - and the subsequent discovery of a "more significant" and "new form" of rib-foot crack in a different aircraft, said the authority.

While the earlier rib-foot cracks originated from the rib to skin panel attachment holes, EASA said, the new form of crack originates from the forward and aft edges of the L-shaped rib foot's vertical section.

"It has been determined that the [new type of] cracks may develop on other aeroplanes after a period of time in service," the directive states. The inspections are an "interim" measure, it adds, and further mandatory actions "might be considered"

    J'ajoute la dernière phrase !

EASA's directive takes effect on 24 January. It has not been classified as an emergency action.

It would also be a process in which every bracket with any sign of either type of cracking would be replaced. Based on the inspections that have already taken place, only a few percent of these brackets may need replacing.

This is a difficult thing to explain in the general media. It is not about cargo doors flying open, or sections of a cabin ceiling disappearing, but about perfectionism, and stopping something that is inconsequential in 2012 becoming a ‘surprise’ in 2022.

    http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2012/01/26/airbus-zeros-in-on-a380-wing-cracks-with-2-stage-fix/

Airbus zeros in on A380 wing cracks with 2 stage fix
    January 26, 2012 – 6:04 am, by Ben Sandilands

Airbus says it has devised a two part fix for the fine cracks that had been appearing inside some of the wings of its giant A380 airliner that will add no more than 89 kilograms to the weight of the jet, which can exceed 569 tonnes at takeoff.

Speaking on a bad line from a conference in Dublin, Tom Williams, the executive vice president for programs, went through the three elements of the problem, which he emphasised had created no safety threat to the 68 A380s currently flying.

Those elements were the particular type of aluminium used for a small number of the 4000 L shaped brackets used inside the wing of each A380, in which two different small cracks had been discovered in some of the jets, and two steps in their incorporation during assembly that had locked in additional stress which predisposed them to develop visible cracks.

The first of these had been a process in which a fastener had been deliberately forced into a small hole in a way that was calculated to add to the strength of the join, for which the grade of alloy used was wrong.

The second of these steps had been the physical pulling together of two sections of wing skin using a butt strap that was supposed to leave a smaller gap than had resulted because of the unintended additional stresses locked into it during assembly.

Williams said that this choice of material, and the unintended additional stressing of the components on the factory floor had set up a situation where in time the loads applied to the wing over repeated cycles, as well as temperature changes, made the cracks that were being inadvertently built in to the wings visible to the naked eye.

He said he expected these cracks would ultimately make themselves apparent in any A380 as it accumulate more hours of flight and operational cycles.

However he said they would not necessarily be visible when the giant jet reached its first major maintenance check, the C check.

In the interim, those brackets in which the cracks had become visible were to be replaced. In the final fix, which Airbus was in the process of defining, the grade of alloy used in the brackets, and the way in which they were incorporated into the wing would be changed to eliminate building in the extra stresses, and the base of the brackets would be slightly thickened.

However the total weight increase of the final fix, whether in newly built A380s, or in due course in the existing A380s, would only be 89 kilograms.

Williams said no unexpected discoveries had so far been made during the inspections that would be completed by tomorrow Friday of the small number of A380s which had flown more than 1300 times.

A total of 20 of the jets will be inspected for these cracks within six weeks of last Friday, when an airworthiness directive for the jets was issued by EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency.

All of these jets, and the other 48 now in service, and all of those delivered without the final fix in place, will ultimately require the replacement of wing brackets installed using the original grade of aluminium and to a different procedure.

It will be about four months before any Qantas A380 now in service reaches the necessary number of flights for inspection and replacement of affected brackets under the new schedule set out by the EASA directive.

It should be noted that when the wing of a Qantas A380 was severely damaged by the disintegration of a Rolls-Royce engine near Singapore in November 2010, it kept its integrity for almost two hours under extreme and never expected loads, in which the manufactured flaws later found in some of those brackets didn’t even come into play during the in-flight crisis.

    Oui Poncho !

    http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/three-factors-conspiring-to-stress-a380-wing-components-367394/

The airframer said the choice of alloy - designated 7449 - combined with a fastener interference-fitting process appeared to be generating the first type of crack in the feet. But a second type of crack - which EASA described as "more significant" - was also being created during the pull-down of wing skins, in the area of a butt-strap joint used between different lower skin panels.

In the region of rib 26 and stringer 21, larger-than-expected gaps - some 1.5-2mm rather than 0.5mm - between the sections involved in the pull-down had resulted in stresses being induced, leading eventually to cracking under the wear of normal airline operations.

Airbus executive vice-president for programmes Tom Williams said the interim fix being carried out on affected aircraft naturally relieved these stresses, and eliminated the problem.

"We have enough ribs and feet [to conduct the repairs]," he said. Williams added that a permanent solution would look at changing the alloy - although this would require thicker rib-feet and add some 89kg in weight - and amending the pull-down process.

"It's not a materials quality issue. It's not a production issue. It's the combination of both," said Airbus.

While 67 A380s have been delivered, some of the in-service fleet will be checked during routine maintenance visits before reaching the cycle threshold set by EASA.

"It has been determined that the [new type of] cracks may develop on other aeroplanes after a period of time in service," the directive states. The inspections are an "interim" measure, it adds, and further mandatory actions "might be considered".

    Bonjour !

Airbus to foot bill for A380 superjumbo wing cracks
    January 27, 2012
    By John Fox-Clinch

Singapore Airlines says the costs of inspecting and repairing cracks found on parts of the giant A380's wings will be borne by Airbus which designs the wings for all its commercial aircraft at Filton.

Cracks were found on four Singapore Airlines planes inspected up until yesterday – and one of the jets is already back in service after repair.

Inspection on six other A380s operated by the airline will be completed by tomorrow.
