    -- les heures de vol et cycles des moteurs GP7200 de l'EA, sur lesquels sont basées les données statistiques avancées par Emirates concernant l'aspect "departure reliability", n'ont pas grande signification, parce qu'ils sont trop faibles en nombre ;

-- même les données correspondantes des RR Trent 900, pourtant bien plus importantes en volume, commencent tout juste à être vraiment "parlantes".

    -- privilégier la technologie de l'EA et du GP .... par rapport aux leurs ;

Engine Alliance claims lead over Trent 900
    By Max Kingsley-Jones

Engine Alliance is confident it can maintain or extend the 1% fuel burn advantage it claims for its GP7200 on the Airbus A380 over the rival Rolls-Royce Trent 900 through systematic upgrades over the coming years.

The General Electric/Pratt & Whitney joint venture's president Jim Moravecek says the engine's performance slightly bettered even the company's own in-house expectations, extending its advantage over the current Trent 900 that powers the A380s on Qantas and Singapore Airlines.

"What surprised us was that we were six-tenths better on thrust specific fuel consumption, which equates to a 1% advantage over the Trent," says Moravecek

"In reality, Rolls is coming in behind on every sales campaign."

Moravececk says he understands that there are possibly plans for R-R to introduce a performance improvement package for the Trent in the 2012 timeframe, but EA is ready to counter this. "With product improvements we'll get 1-2% improvements over the next few years."

During the show the engine-maker moved into a market share lead over its rival (in terms of aircraft units) when it was selected by Etihad and Air Austral to power the 10 and two A380s they have on order, respectively.

These deals take its orders (by installed engines) to 384 units, and Moravecek is confident the EA sales tally on the A380 will eventually quadruple to "1,500 engines".

He says that EA's view of the 20-year very large aircraft market is "an average of all the different forecasts - around 600-700 aircraft". This is about half that of the Airbus outlook, which forecasts deliveries of 1,283 very large passenger aircraft and 415 freighters. Boeing recently adjusted its very large airliner/freighter forecast down by 25%, from 980 units to 740.

Bonjour chers tous. Merci pour ce post. Intox.

Show deals reinforce Abu Dhabi ambitions
    By Murdo Morrison
Abu Dhabi reinforced its ambitions to be a major aerospace player, signing at the show a major maintenance, repair and overhaul package with General Electric and launching plans to build an aerospace cluster at its second international airport, Al Ain.

The GE deal sees Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies, a subsidiary of government-owned investment house Mubadala, become the world's first MRO provider for the GEnx engines that will power the Boeing 787 and 747-8.
The GE facility will become fully operational in 2013 and support the growing fleet of GE engines in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Les faits. Il n'y a pas de DPO là -dedans!
Mubadala's sister airline, Etihad, announced at the show it is selecting the GEnx for its 35 787s, as well as the Engine Alliance GP7200 - in which GE is a partner - for its 10 Airbus A380s.

GE joint venture CFM International lost out, however, to rival International Aero Engines in the contest to power the carrier's A320s.

The GE announcement is part of a broader partnership announced last year under which Mubadala committed to work with the US giant in areas such as commercial finance, clean energy research and development and training. Mubadala - which also owns 70% of Swiss MRO group SR Technics as well as major stakes in Piaggio Aerospace and Ferrari - has a remit to invest in industries and businesses that will boost the technological base of the United Arab Emirates.

Separately, another Mubadala division, Abu Dhabi Airports (ADAC), is to establish an aerospace industrial park in the emirate's second city, anchored by a Mubadala plant designing and building composite components for Airbus and other aero manufacturers. The partnership venture with EADS was announced last year.
At the show, Mubadala signed deals with a succession of European small and medium-enterprises which will open facilities at the 25km2 (9.7 miles2) park, including four German companies that are part of Bavarian aerospace cluster BavAIRia, Swiss rotary engine manufacturer Mistral Engines and two UK firms.
Beagle Aerospace will build a spares warehouse and eventually a composite repair facility, while Generation Metals International will supply aerospace metalics from the Al Ain site.

With Qatar Airways also announcing an order for 24 A320 family aircraft, Gulf-based companies were making the running again at Paris. One company notable by its absence was Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, a significant force at recent shows. The group has been affected by the collapse in Dubai's economy. However, the chief executive of the emirate's airports company, Paul Griffiths, dismissed at the show claims that the statelet's aviation ambitions were derailed and said $17.6 billion investment plans for the world's biggest airport, Dubai World Central at Jebel Ali, were still firmly in place.

Wink

Engine Alliance GP7200s have marked their first full year of service powering an Emirates A380 with no in-flight shutdowns and a departure reliability rate greater than 99.9%.
The carrier operates five GP7200-powered A380s and will be the largest operator of GP7200-powered A380s, with a total order for 58 aircraft and more than 250 engines.
Air France is scheduled to receive its first GP7200-powered A380 in October, and Air Austral, Etihad Airways, International Lease Finance and Korean Airlines have also ordered GP7200-powered A380s.
Engine Alliance is a 50-50 joint venture between GE, which makes the
    GP7200's high-pressure compressor, combustor and high-pressure turbine,
and Pratt & Whitney, which makes the fan module, low-pressure
    compressor and low-pressure turbine.
Other GP7200 programme participants include MTU Aero Engines, Snecma and Techspace Aero.

    http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_channel.jsp?channel=mro&id=news/rolls9289.xml&headline=Rolls%20Reveals%20Trent%20900%20Enhancement%20Package

Rolls Reveals Trent 900 Enhancement Package

    Sep 28, 2009

By Guy Norris/Aviation Week & Space Technology

LOS ANGELES--Rolls-Royce is developing a fuel-burn performance improvement package on the Trent 900 designed to keep the Airbus A380 engine competitive in its fiercely contested battle with the Engine Alliance GP7200.

"We're committed to a 1% fuel burn improvement. We're taking technology from the Trent 1000 and 700EP and putting that into the Trent 900. That technology wasn't available for the Trent 900 at certification but is part of a package we've launched," says Ian Crawford, Rolls-Royce's head of Airbus programs.

The initiative comes as both engine suppliers begin to see steady growth of the A380 in-service fleet and continuing pressure to cut fuel burn. Details of the package emerged in the wake of claims by the General Electric/Pratt & Whitney Engine Alliance that the GP7200 enjoys a 1% fuel-burn advantage over the Trent 900, and come in the face of the U.S. engine makers' avowed intention to maintain a constant performance gap over their competitor.

Rolls-Royce disputes the existence of that fuel-burn performance lead and says its improvement planthe Trent 900EP (enhanced performance)will lead to more substantial efficiency modifications by around 2013. Still in the early stages, these plans will incorporate advanced technology from the most recent iterations of the Boeing 787's Trent 1000 and the Trent XWB for the A350.

"I don't know where they get their data to substantiate those claims," says Crawford. "A380 MSN003 was the performance aircraft and we did very specific tests with all four engines calibrated. With the technology from the Trent 1000 and XWB, I'm pretty confident the T900 will keep in pole position."

The core of the package will be the introduction of elliptical leading-edge modifications throughout the entire compression system, including improved high- and intermediate-pressure (HP/IP) compressor blades and vanes. The modification, which also applies to the fan and outlet guide vanes, improves flow interactions by altering boundary layer thickness and increasing laminar flow. The changes are similar to elliptical leading-edge modifications made to the HP compressor introduced recently to International Aero Engines' V2500 in the SelectOne program, as well as the Trent 700EP. The elliptical feature also is part of the baseline fan design for the Trent 1000 and XWB.

"The package includes tweaks to the air management system, and that also affects fuel burn," says Crawford. "We're very confident in being able to achieve the 1% post-2011. The program is already defined, the detailed design is being done and bits are in manufacture. Testing is next year and will cover maturity modifications to upgrade areas we've seen on early engines." These include "potential 'wear out' areas we want to address, such as seal segments and optimized tip clearance."

As with the Trent 700EP, the 900EP enhancement will be offered as an upgrade kit for existing engines. "The modifications are all optional and are completely interchangeable. You will get the full 1% if you install all the parts," says Richard Keen, Airbus programs marketing director. "From 2011 this will be the production standard for all new Trent 900 orders," he adds.

"We're already having thoughts on what comes after this," says Crawford. "We are looking at the Trent 1000 and Trent XWB [for what] might flow back into the Trent 900. We have technology and other aero configurations which we have put into the XWB." Although he is not specific about what XWB features could find their way into Phase 2, the anticipated benefit is expected to exceed the fuel burn reductions in Phase 1. "The prudent thing is to run the XWB and get the empirical data," he says. "We're not yet committed to Phase 2 as that represents quite a big change to the engine. [That program] is probably 18 months to two years away after 2011."

The A350 engine will be the first Trent to feature a two-stage IP turbine, and is the first in the family to incorporate blisks. To increase cruise efficiency, it will have a modulation system that optimizes bleed air for turbine blade cooling. Bench testing of the first XWB engine is to start in the second quarter of 2010; certification is set for the end of 2011.

    Bonnes nouvelles !

Engine Alliance GP7200 Achieves 99.9% Departure Reliability Rating After 18 Months in Service
    SINGAPORE, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SINGAPORE AIR SHOW --
The Engine Alliance GP7200 has marked 18 months in revenue service.
Since entering service with the world's largest A380 fleet, Emirates,
in August 2008, the GP7200 has achieved a departure reliability rating
of 99.9% and experienced no in-flight shutdowns.
"We're delighted -- and more importantly, our customers are
delighted -- with the operational performance of the GP7200," Engine
Alliance President Mary Ellen Jones said. "In addition to the
exceptional reliability of the engine, the fuel performance is even
    better than we expected."
There are nine GP7200-powered A380s in service. Recent Engine
Alliance milestones include the first GP7200-powered A380 delivery to
Air France in October 2009, and in December, the GP7200 reached 100,000
hours of revenue service. Other Engine Alliance customers include Air
Austral, Etihad, ILFC and Korean Air.
The GP7200 is derived from two successful wide body engine
programs, the GE90 and the PW4000. It benefits from the two programs'
latest, proven technologies and the lessons learned from more than 25
million flight hours of successful operation. Certified at 76,500
pounds (340 kN) of thrust, the engine has the capability to produce
more than 81,500 pounds (363 kN) of thrust. In addition to being the
quietest, most fuel efficient engine for the A380, the GP7200 engine
has emissions that are well below current and anticipated regulations.
The GP7200 is manufactured at GE and Pratt & Whitney,
with GE manufacturing the high pressure compressor, combustor and high
pressure turbine, and Pratt &Whitney manufacturing the fan module,
low pressure compressor and low pressure turbine. Final engine assembly
is conducted at Pratt & Whitney's Engine Center in Middletown,
Connecticut. GP7000 Engine Program participants include SNECMA
(France), Techspace Aero (Belgium) and MTU Aero Engines (Germany).
The Engine Alliance is a 50/50 joint venture of General
Electric (NYSE: GE) and Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United
    Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Engine Alliance Completes 100th GP7200 Engine
    Specific Fuel Consumption Improvement Noted

July 15, 2010 -- East Hartford, CT -- The Engine Alliance today celebrated completion of its 100th GP7200 engine with employees and partners at a ceremony in Middletown, CT. The GP7200 powers Airbus' A380 aircraft, and the 100th engine is destined for an Air France airplane.

"We are so proud of this partnership," said Engine Alliance President Mary Ellen Jones, speaking at the ceremony held at EA partner Pratt & Whitney's assembly and test facility. "One hundred engines is a significant milestone, but it is only the beginning for an engine that has met or exceeded our customers' expectations."

Jones told the audience that in recognition of the GP7200's demonstrated fuel performance on the A380, Airbus recently revised the performance handbook, or "Orange Book" to reflect a 0.5% Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC) improvement for the GP7200-powered aircraft. The Orange Book is frequently used by prospective aircraft purchasers as a predictor of aircraft performance. This improvement substantiates the GP7200's total competitive fuel burn advantage of at least 1%.

"With the best fuel performance on the A380 and outstanding reliability, the GP7200 is providing significant value for our customers," noted Jones. Nearing two years in revenue service, GP7200 engine's dispatch reliability rating is 99.9%.

There are 14 GP7200-powered A380s in service. EA launch customer Emirates began operating the aircraft in August 2008 and received its eleventh A380 on July 2. Emirates is Airbus' largest A380 customer with orders for 90 of the super-jumbo aircraft. Air France entered service with the GP7200-powered A380 in late 2009 and has three A380s in its fleet to date. Other GP7200 customers include Korean Air, Etihad Airways, Air Austral and International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC).
The GP7200 is the result of innovations to the combined technologies of its member companies' most successful wide body engines: the GE90 and the PW4000. The GP7200 utilizes the lessons learned from more than 25 million flight hours of successful operation with these legacy engines and incorporates new technology to produce the quietest, most fuel efficient engine for the A380. The GP7200 is certified at 76,500 pounds (340 kN) of thrust, but has the capability to produce more than 81,500 pounds (363 kN). Its emissions are well below current and anticipated regulations.

FARNBOROUGH: Airbus recognises Engine Alliance A380 fuel burn improvement
    By Max Kingsley-Jones

Engine Alliance has been given a boost by Airbus in its battle with Rolls-Royce on the A380 after the airframer officially recognised a further improvement in the GP7200-powered version's fuel burn.

"In April we received a nice boost from Airbus, which gave our fuel burn advantage over the competition further validation when it revised the 'Orange Book' performance handbook to give us an additional 0.5% credit," says Engine Alliance president Mary Ellen Jones.

She says that this was on top of the 1% credit that Engine Alliance already has. "So this puts us 1.5% ahead of our own specification to Airbus. So in our view we are 1.5% ahead of the competition."
    ---------------------

GP7200 reduces weight to woo A380 customers

    By: Thierry Dubois
    July 22, 2010
    Air Transport and Cargo Engines

The Engine Alliance GP7200 engine is in the middle of a weight-reduction program that may further help sales as the General Electric-Pratt & Whitney joint venture is engaged in at least three campaigns: with Qatar Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and Vietnam Airlines. The engine maker (Hall 4 Stand A10) expects 19 Airbus A380s to be in service flying its turbofans by the end of the year.

According to Engine Alliance president Mary Ellen Jones, the GP7200 has lost 150 pounds since entry into service two years ago. “We were a bit above spec,” she said. An additional 50 pounds are to be saved on engines delivered at some point next year, which will be about 100 pounds better than specified, thanks to a new turbine exhaust case.

The new component is being evaluated on an engine being used for endurance trials. To “keep ahead of any issue,” Engine Alliance engineers have conducted this maturation program in an MTU test cell, where a GP7200 has already logged 3,000 cycles at 77,000 pounds of thrust. Analytic teardown is in progress.

Fuel burn has been improved, too, Jones reported. In April, Airbus revised the A380 performance handbook to reflect 0.5-percent lower specific fuel consumption. “We are thus 1.5-percent better than our [Rolls-Royce Trent 900] competitor,” she said.
