Bonjour !

Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 awarded FAA ETOPS approval

By Andrew Doyle
Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000 turbofan has been awarded 330min extended
twin engine operations approval by the US Federal Aviation
Administration. The engine is the lead powerplant for the Boeing
787 twinjet, due to enter service with All Nippon Airways (ANA) in the
third quarter.R-R has meanwhile delivered Trent 1000s to Boeing
to support 787 ETOPS test flights for approval of the engine/aircraft
combination. It has also handed over a pair of Trent 1000s for the first
787 to be operated by ANA.Simon Carlisle, R-R Trent 1000
programme director, said: "ETOPS approval marks a major milestone for
the Trent 1000 programme, setting new industry standards. We have
produced the quietest and lightest engine for the aircraft, with the
lowest fuel burn over the lifetime of an engine
, contributing to the
787's target of delivering 20% less CO2 than previous generation
aircraft."The Trent 1000, which ran for the first time in 2006,
was granted FAA certification in August 2007, and has amassed more than
10,000h of ground and flight tests, said R-R. The engine powered the
787's first flight in December 2009 and has since powered 80% of all
test flights. The engine equips five of the seven aircraft in the 787
flight test programme, and recently passed 2,800h of flight tests, R-R
added.A Trent 1000 suffered an uncontained failure during ground
testing in the UK on 10 August 2010
, but R-R said a modification had
been developed for later engines. However, Boeing last year blamed a
lack of modified engines for causing delays to parts of the 787 flight
test programme.
General Electric offers its GEnx as an alternative powerplant for the 787.

787 test aircraft flies Package B Trent 1000

By Jon Ostrower

Boeing's 787 test aircraft ZA004 returned to flying on 21 May with the first Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 Package B engine hung under its right wing.
It marked the beginning of tests on the updated powerplant, which is
meant to deliver specific fuel consumption (SFC) rates within 1% of the
engine-maker's initially targeted specification.
The fourth 787 test aircraft had been down for maintenance since 27
April for installation of the engine and its extensive instrumentation.
However, the aircraft performed a flight of around 4h, travelling along
the US Pacific coast. The upgraded left-hand engine is expected to be
installed on ZA004 later this month, programme sources said.
The Package B engine includes a revised six-stage low-pressure
turbine design, high-aspect-ratio blades, relocation of the
intermediate-pressure compressor bleed offtake ports and a fan outlet
guide vanes with improved aerodynamics.
It is also believed that the Package B engine also incorporates

http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/
Rolls-Royce unveils 787-10X Trent 1000 revamp, confirms Package C

PARIS -- Rolls-Royce will make a significant revamp to Boeing's 787-10X Trent 1000 engine and has confirmed the existence of a Package C upgrade intended for the 787-9.

The
same core scaling up required for the 5,000lb thrust boost on the Trent
XWB that will power the Airbus A350-1000 - now delayed to 2017 - will
also be applied to the 76,000lb Trent 1000 on the conceptual -10X, says
Mark King, president of Rolls-Royce civil aerospace, reports
Flightglobal.
"The technologies we're running on
the testbed between the XWB engine and the demonstrator gives us a real
opportunity to upgrade the Trent 1000. We think we can do something that
could open clear daylight relative to the competition on the Trent
1000."
--
"Our goal here is to make sure that when we do that, we
design an engine that covers the whole family. Once Boeing nail down
their requirements for the -10X then we'll respond with our offering for
the whole family."
Boeing has loosely defined
the 787-10X as a 320-seat, 6,800 to 7,000nm range aircraft with a
maximum takeoff weight of roughly 553,000lbs, similar to that of the
787-9. While a final entry service target is yet undefined, Boeing says
the aircraft will be in service no earlier than 2016.

Additionally,
the Package C engine, previously believed to be known as Package B+,
due for entry into service on the 787-9 in late 2013 is nearing its
detailed design phase, whose improvements will also feed back to the
787-8.

Further, Rolls-Royce confirmed that only the first four 787's
for launch customer All Nippon Airways will be delivered with
significantly de-rated Package A engines at 64,000lbs of thrust for use
on domestic and regional routes before the Package B engine is
introduces along with ANA's international long-range interior. The
70,000lb Package B engine is scheduled to deliver to ANA before the end
of 2011.

ZA004 is currently undergoing nautical air miles evaluations on the Package B power plant, which has been in flight testing since May 21.

Bonjour !
Tiens ...

http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/5338006/

This time it seems GE had the more serious miss, GE has had to rebuild almost the whole engine to come to spec, not to beat it as initially proclaimed. They seem to have started with about 3%+ off and has then rebuild the LT section completely, the HT nozzle IIRC to come to withing 1.5% of the spec (the HT nozzle redesign was necessary to get them to 75klb). Then they will rebuild the rest of the engine to come to spec but not better it with PIP2, it might be that the FAN is not touched in the end.

RR also had to redesign the LT in package B which gave them a 70klb cert level, package C will waterfall TXWB HT technology to give them a 76klb engine for the 787-9 and -10.

----------------- Et l'avis de Rheinbote Rep N° 14 ! ----------

--------------

GE selected 'quick win' phase one and a 'redesign' phase two, resulting in PIP1 and PIP2 packages to address a shortfall in the order of 3-4% (earlier estimates were 2-3%). RR selected a three-phase approach with a 'quick win' Package A, a 'redesign' Package B, and a further 'redesign' Package C. The latter is still being defined in terms of technology portfolio including 'accelerated' items that were originally planned for the Trent XWB. That alone may give you a feeling that RR's problems were a little more challenging than GE's. I believe the Trent 1K fell short by 4-6%. I cannot bellieve RR would do another two redesigns if Package A would already get 'to within 1%" as RR PR claims. You correctly mention thrust increases, which are another dimension of the improvement programs. Underestimating airframe loads on the engines seem to play a role here. RR is currently devising a concept for a fourth package that aims to consolidate all the different Trent 1K and Trent XWB engine designs into just one or two.

------------

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/in-focus-rolls-royce-steps-up-work-on-three-shaft-engine-technologies-368728/

Part 1
------

Rolls-Royce is simultaneously investing in a suite of technologies that - if all goes to plan - will equip the next iteration of the three-shaft Trent in time for future widebody developments that could go into service around the end of the decade.

The Trent 1000 has already powered ANA's initial 787s on several hundred revenue flights, and the first long-range variant equipped with "Package B" engines began flights to Frankfurt in January.

"I suspect this is where you'll start to see some of the real benefits of the aeroplane, with the high humidity rates and the differences in cabin pressure," says Trent 1000 programme director Simon Carlisle. "It will be good to see that they start to get passenger differentiation at that point in time."

The first four ANA aircraft have Package A engines, which will be replaced with Package B units. "We had a lot of milestones last year for a project that's been fairly long in the tooth," says Carlisle. "We certified two engines, we cleared ETOPS, we did function and reliability [testing], we delivered the first aeroplane and we went into service."

In terms of development, Carlisle is focused on the 74,000lb-thrust (330kN) Package C Trent 1000 that will debut on board the stretched 787-9. The intention is that this will also become the standard powerplant for the baseline -8, allowing Rolls-Royce to maintain a common bill of materials to simplify production and support.

Further down the line, a further 787 stretch known as the -10X could become a reality. "We're still talking to Boeing and trying to understand what their plans for the -10X are, specifically in terms of size and timing, and they continue to be the key points of that discussion," says Carlisle. "We feel well placed because we have an engine that's capable of going up to 74k of thrust. It has more capability if required."

According to Boeing figures, the Package B engine is 2.3% better on fuel-burn than Package A, although B remains 2% off the Rolls-Royce specification. C is projected to be "just over 1% off spec" says Carlisle, but further technology insertion should get the engine back to specification.

"We are looking at putting some more technology in. We are doing some stuff with the LP turbine case cooling and changing some of the aerodynamics in the compressor. Not huge change packages, but some," says Carlisle.

The plan calls for certain improvements developed for the Trent XWB to be introduced on the 1000. "The thing that is very attractive to us is the [XWB's] high- and intermediate-pressure 'rising line' compressors," says Carlisle. "It's a good technology and it's easily transferable into the Trent 1000. Similarly, we've got a whole load of demonstrator programmes running that are churning out technologies that we are looking at."

FLEXIBLE TESTING

Although the Package C engine will enter service powering the 787-9, it will be flight-tested on the -8.

"What we were keen to do is not link the certification and qualification of an engine to a new airplane delivery. It would be bad for us if the -9 suddenly started to slip and we couldn't put a better engine on the -8 because it was linked to the -9," says Carlisle. "Boeing have exactly the same view, but their motivation is that by doing that they can offload some of the flight testing from the -9."

European Aviation Safety Agency approval of the Package C powerplant is targeted for the end of the first quarter of 2013. Entry into service with 787-9 launch customer Air New Zealand is scheduled for April 2014, and Rolls-Royce is now focused on achieving the required production-rate ramp-up after years of delays to the airframe programme.

"It's early days," says Carlisle. "We've been changing the product, incorporating modifications. They all need to get flushed through and stabilised in the supply chain. We, like Boeing, have got improvements we need to make there to get to the point where we feel more confident about the rate at which we produce engines and the cadence with which we produce them on a routine basis. It's no different from other programmes.

"It's quite a shallow beach for the Trent 1000 on the 787. We have only ANA until, notionally, Q3 this year... There are about 12 aircraft to deliver, then we start to see LAN and LOT come on line. From my perspective, having a single operator to focus on with high-cyclic usage is a great learning position to be in."

The manufacturer is building about one Trent 1000 per week, which will increase to 1.5 at the end of 2012. The rate will further rise to two per week during 2013.

Trent 1000 reliability tops 99.9%
Five months after its introduction with All Nippon Airways, the Trent 1000 engine has topped a dispatch reliability of 99.9%, says Rolls-Royce. The engine-maker notes it is the best introduction of a new RR engine, which has flown more than 4,000h since its late October service entry.

(Enfin, on l'espère)

Rolls-Royce Achieves New Trent 1000 Milestone

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has successfully completed the first run of an upgraded version of the Trent 1000 that will be the launch engine for the latest member of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family, the 787-9.

The Trent 1000 Package C programme will provide 74,000lb thrust for the 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which is due to enter service with Air New Zealand in 2014. Trent 1000 Package C engines will also begin powering 787-8 aircraft that enter service later in 2014.

The engine began running on a test bed in Derby in April and is scheduled to complete an extensive test programme over the next eight weeks.

Two Trent 1000 Package C engines are now being built for initial flight testing on the Rolls-Royce 747-200 flying test bed, with a three-month programme scheduled to begin in the summer which will optimise a new advanced turbine case cooling system to improve efficiency.

Bonjour !

The other key area on EFE for technology validation is the high-pressure turbine. This area has arguably the most arduous duty of any in the engine. The rotor blades rotate at 13,500rpm with tip speeds reaching 1,200mph while operating at temperatures well in excess of the melting point of the alloy, and each is developing 800hp, equivalent to a Formula One engine.

---------
Package C provides around a 1% improvement in fuel efficiency achieved through "a combination of aerodynamic enhancements and correcting some of the things we've learned from the package B engine", says Carlisle.

The first package C engine has completed around 76h of testing. Tests onboard R-R's 747 flying testbed will begin later this year, to evaluate its performance at altitude. Certification is scheduled for June 2013, "coincident with the start of flight testing on the -8 and -9. The first flight-compliant engines will go into production at the beginning of 2013," says Carlisle.

The Trent 1000 is also the lead engine for the -9, due to enter service with ANZ on the "critical mission" of Los Angeles-Auckland.

Package C has already been run up to 80,000lb thrust in tests. The main changes - compared with package B - are to the blading in the IP compressor, as well as the introduction of a semi-active low-pressure turbine tip control system, which is "about controlling clearances at altitude to give better fuel burn".

The package C engine will be certificated at 74,000lb, while Carlisle says a study engine for service entry in 2016 is "the engine we're looking at that has the thrust to meet the requirements of the -10X".

Merci

The Trent 1000C will be certified initially for use on the 787-8, although the first delivered engine will be for the 787-9, said Carlisle. (Pack C can be retrofitted to an engine with the existing Pack B, but the earlier upgrade cannot be fitted to a 787-9.)

By the beginning of last month, Rolls-Royce had completed 76 hours of Pack C running since the initial run in April, covering 70 percent of the test schedule, during which 80,000 pounds of thrust had been demonstrated in a test bed at the manufacturer’s Derby headquarters in England. An eight-week test program was scheduled for completion in June.

Two Trent 1000 Package C engines have been built for initial flight testing on Rolls-Royce’s own Boeing 747-200 flying test bed, with a three-month program scheduled to begin during mid-2012 to optimize “a new advanced turbine-case cooling system” to improve efficiency. Carlisle said the upgrade is on track for the delivery of first engines to Boeing, where they will be test flown on the 787-8 next year.

Rolls-Royce said the Trent 1000’s “sophisticated” health monitoring system has been providing “very valuable” operational service information that sometimes has enabled the manufacturer to anticipate airline questions. Carlisle said operational experience is accruing “very rapidly,” and will have doubled by the end of next month, by which time there will be 14 such aircraft in service.

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/20120722_07.html

All Nippon Airways is planning to temporarily ground some of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets to replace faulty engine components.

ANA officials say Boeing found poor-quality engine parts in 5 of the airline's fleet and that corrosion may possibly cause engine failure.

The company says it hasn't experienced any trouble with the aircraft so far, but it decided to take precautions by grounding the 5 planes and replacing their parts.

ANA cancelled 2 flights departing from Tokyo's Haneda airport on Saturday.

All Nippon Airways was the world's first airline to put the state-of-the art aircraft into service last November. It currently operates eleven 787s.

http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2012/07/23/ana-all-nippon-787-flights-on-temporary-hold/

We received a message from Boeing to the effect that there may be an issue with the gearbox (possible damaged gear) on the engines of the 787s in the ANA fleet. No related problems have arisen on our 787s, however, we have ascertained that the part at issue is fitted to five of our 11 strong fleet. Working with Boeing, we will replace the part in question and return our fleet to an operating state as quickly as possible.

The remaining six aircraft in the ANA fleet have not been affected by this issue and we will continue to operate them safely.

Damage was discovered in a Rolls-Royce engine gearbox used for endurance testing on the ground. A specific gear showed corrosion due to an issue in the surface treatment at the time of production, which led to damage to the gear box. Certain 787 engines within the ANA fleet have gears produced using the same process, that may possibly lead to corrosion.
