Confident Branson: V Australia ready for competition
Tuesday February 10, 2009
Virgin Group President Richard Branson was upbeat at Friday's Seattle delivery ceremony as V Australia took delivery of the first of seven 777-300ERs and, speaking to ATWOnline, dismissed naysayers who warned of starting an airline in difficult times.

"We have one the world's strongest brands. Sure if you launch when the economy is booming you're going to get to profit quicker than when you're launching in probably the worst recession since 1929," he said, adding that, V Australia parent Virgin Blue did not need to go to the markets for capital as Qantas did last week (ATWOnline, Feb. 5). "We just don't need it," he said.
......Branson claimed passengers will choose V Australia for both its fares and its product. "We have the best cabins, most enthusiastic staff and flying will be really fun," he promised. Forward bookings are strong, with flights for the next two months 65% full and loads in July already at 45%.

The carrier's 777-300ER is configured with 35 business class beds, 40 premium economy and 288 economy seats. V Australia has up to 15 orders and options.

by Geoffrey Thomas

V Australia receives AOC
By Leithen Francis

Virgin Blue's new long-haul carrier V Australia today received its air operators's certificate, clearing the way for it to have its inaugural flight on 27 February.
The carrier says in a statement it received the AOC this afternoon and it is the first Australian carrier to have the Boeing 777-300ER on its AOC.
Oui ! Qantas n'est pas un "fan" des B777-300ER / -200LR !
"The final process to secure the AOC, which V Australia applied for in August 2007, required a number of exercises over the past fortnight including an emergency evacuation demonstration and a recent proving flight, closely monitored by Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia (CASA) officials," the airline says.
There was also a mock medical emergency diversion to Auckland, it adds.
Ils vont loin dans leurs simulations !
CASA granting the airline an AOC comes just a little over a week before V Australia is due to launch its first commercial flight. This will be a Sydney-Los Angeles service starting on 27 February using a recently delivered 777-300ER.

V Australia delays 777-300ER deliveries.

Virgin Blue's long-haul operation V Australia has delayed delivery of two Boeing 777-300ERs but Virgin Blue has exercised purchase rights for five Boeing 737-800s to replace 737s on lease. In a statement today to the Australian stock exchange Virgin Blue says V Australia is getting a fourth 777-300ER in this year's third quarter as planned and it is getting another 777-300ER in 2010's second half as planned. But delivery of two other 777-300ERs, due in 2010, have been delayed to 2011 and 2012, it says.Boeing
does gain something though because Virgin Blue says it has exercised
purchase rights for five 737-800s and these new aircraft will replace
leased aircraft. The move to delay 777-300ER deliveries is "a
prudent action in the current operating environment and is part of
Virgin Blue's ongoing group-wide measures to adjust its business
operations to current and forecast trading conditions".V
Australia currently has three 777-300ERS and these are used for
services to the USA. The airline, like most international carriers, has
experienced a drop in traffic due to the faltering international
economy.

Emirates and V Australia to codeshare on Tasman routes
By Leithen Francis

Emirates and Virgin Blue's long-haul international arm V Australia will start codesharing in October on trans-Tasman routes.

The carriers say that on 25 October, V Australia will place its code on Emirates' daily services from Sydney to Christchurch and Auckland in New Zealand.

"Emirates and the Virgin Blue Group already share a strong partnership via reciprocal benefits within the two airline's frequent flyer programmes," they add, pointing out that Emirates is also an interline partner of Virgin Blue.

Emirates operates Airbus A380s on the Sydney-Auckland route using fifth freedom rights, and it serves the Sydney-Christchurch market using Boeing 777s.

The trans-Tasman service is a highly competitive market with Air New Zealand, Qantas Airways, Jetstar and Virgin Blue's Pacific Blue all fighting for market share.

Bonjour à tous

Australia approves Delta-Virgin trans-Pacific joint venture
By Siva Govindasamy

Australia's competition watchdog has given Virgin Blue and Delta Air Lines permission to form a joint venture to operate trans-Pacific flights.

"Under the joint venture, the airlines would take a coordinated approach to a range of issues including pricing, revenue management, schedules, capacity and routes flown," says the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

"The entry of Virgin Blue and Delta on the trans-Pacific routes has created strong competition on price and service in the market for passenger transport. The ACCC expects that this would continue to be the case under the new arrangements to the benefit of consumers," says the ACCC's chairman Graeme Samuel.

The move would allow Delta and Virgin's long-haul subsidiary V Australia to break the dominance on trans-Pacific routes held by Australian national carrier Qantas Airways and United Airlines.

V Australia began flying between Sydney and Los Angeles in February, and Delta followed in June. V Australia has since expanded the services to fly out of Brisbane, and will begin flights out of Melbourne by end-2009.

Approving the joint venture, says the ACCC, will allow Virgin Blue and Delta to "compete more effectively" against the incumbents on the routes.

The commission adds that it "recognises that the extent to which these benefits are realised will depend largely on the conduct of the parties under the joint venture", and that it would therefore give the carriers authorisation for only three years initially.

Delta and Virgin Blue welcome the decision, saying it would allow them to offer "seamless, integrated travel between cities throughout the Australian and US domestic markets", help to maintain their existing trans-Pacific scheduling and introduce new direct routes.

"The proposed alliance will allow the carriers to provide an enhanced service and develop future services and routes, through collaboration on route and product planning, codesharing on their respective networks and the extension of frequent flyer program benefits and lounge access to customers of both airlines," they add.

They must now wait for the US Department of Transportation to rule on their application before proceeding with their joint venture.

http://www.atwonline.com/news/other.html?issueDate=11%2F3%2F2009

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission issued a draft determination finding that the planned transpacific joint venture between Virgin Blue and Delta Air Lines "is likely to assist Virgin Blue and Delta to compete more effectively against the incumbents on the routes, Qantas and United Airlines." The partnership also requires approval from the US Dept. of Transportation (ATWOnline, July 10). ACCC said it was proposing authorization for an initial three-year period in order to gauge "the conduct of the parties under the joint venture," but that it believed that Blue's and DL's entry "has created strong competition on price and service in the market for passenger transport." It is accepting comment until Nov. 17.

http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2012/02/23/virgin-australia-qantas-and-its-leadership-crisis/

Virgin Australia, Qantas, and its leadership crisis
February 23, 2012 – 4:55 pm, by Ben Sandilands

Virgin Australia did its bit today to make news by adding to leadership tensions at Qantas.

Virgin Australia’s CEO and ex Qantas senior executive John Borghetti delivered astonishing first half year results, in which the smaller airline made more by way of statutory net profits after tax of $51.8 million than the entire Qantas group, which made only $42 million by the same measure in its results to 31 December as announced a week ago today.

Its tiny international operation made $35 million EBIT, compared to claims by Qantas CEO Alan Joyce that his group’s far larger Qantas long haul operation continues to lose more than $200 million a year, and unlike Qantas, Virgin Australia’s loyalty scheme earnings contributed comparatively little to the overall result, which was based overwhelmingly on profitably flying people rather than selling halo points to third parties like grocery chains or hotels.

If that wasn’t bad enough for Qantas, Borghetti also announced a plan to split the company into a domestic Virgin Australia Holdings company and a new unlisted Virgin Australian International Holdings unit with a view to greatly increasing investment in the domestic operations where both Qantas/Jetstar and its major competitor make most of their money.

The complex split plan, in which existing shareholders are given shares in the new unlisted international company by way of an in specie dividend, has a rather simple but unstated objective, which is to facilitate any desire by Etihad Airways or other interested foreign airline or institutional investor to buy their way into the share register as significant and rich equity partners who will help fund a major assault on the Qantas Cityflyer domestic trunk routes as well as grow the connecting traffic Virgin Australia is bringing to Etihad’s hub at Abu Dhabi.

This will require FIRB approval, and it might well be fought tooth and nail by Qantas, but it potentially allows an already profitable challenger airline group to fund ambitious expansion plans.

For Qantas, the pressure points are obvious. Joyce is being outflanked where it hurts, and has a poorly articulated Asia savior plan for a part owned premium carrier that is somehow going to fund the recapitalization of a shrinking and loss making long haul Qantas operation with profits from a venture that will be substantially owned by Jetstar’s most potent Asian competitor, Air Asia and based in Kuala Lumpur, a centre from which it will compete with the existing Qantas investment in Singapore as a combined Qantas/Jetstar hub.

Investor doubts about the rationality and practicability of the Joyce plan, in its various iterations, and their inherent absurdities and conflicts are growing by the day, including the Qantas CEO’s guidance a week ago today that he now wanted it to be ‘capital light ’ with a fleet that Qantas paid for in the smallest possible measure.

The ‘hello Asia, we want a free ride to take your business away’ message is not going down well, either in Asia, or in Australia.
