Continental Airlines a fait un nouveau pas vers son entrée au sein de Star Alliance. La compagnie américaine a
reçu un accord préliminaire du DoT (Department of Transportation) pour intégrer l’alliance de compagnies aériennes.

Le bureau américain a également donné son feu vert pour qu’elle bénéficie de la même immunité antitrust que neuf autres des membres, à savoir Air Canada, Austrian, bmi, Lufthansa, LOT, SAS, Swiss, TAP Air Portugal et United Airlines.

Le DoT s’est enfin exprimé en faveur de la formation d’une alliance transatlantique du même type que le
joint-venture entre Air France, KLM, Delta et Northwest sur le secteur. Celle-ci comprendra Continental, United, Lufthansa et Air Canada.

Continental avait officiellement reconnu son intention de quitter SkyTeam pour Star Alliance en juin 2008. Le transfert d’alliance devrait être effectué au cours du quatrième trimestre 2009.

Continental sees $30 million revenue hit from H1N1

Continental Airlines estimates a $30 million reduction in its consolidated May revenues due to falling demand triggered by the H1N1 flu that originated in Mexico.
After the onset of the flu Continental temporarily cut its capacity to Mexico by 50%. Prior to those cuts the carrier operated approximately 450 flights per week to the country, the largest amount of any US carrier.

Intéressant que cette compagnie semble avoir pu quantifier cet impact avec une précision raisonnable !

Le Ministère de la Justice américain considère comme trop étendue l’immunité anti trust demandée par Continental ( Star Alliance ), particulièrement sur le réseau international

US Dept. of Justice strongly opposed extension of antitrust immunity to Continental Airlines when it joins Star Alliance this October, arguing that the immunity request is "unprecedented in scope and breadth" and would "sanction collusion" between current Star member United Airlines and Continental "on all international service."

The US Dept. of Transportation in early April approved CO's entry into Star and granted
tentative antitrust immunity to the carrier and certain Star partners and to CO's proposed transatlantic joint venture with Air Canada, Lufthansa and United Airlines, but DOT agreed to delay its final order (scheduled for May 31) pending comments from DOJ.

In a 58-page document filed Friday, DOJ said, "the addition of Continental to the immunized Star ATI Alliance is likely to result in harm to certain international routes, including routes between the US and China, routes spanning the US and Canadian border, and routes between the US and Denmark, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland."

Additionally, it would eliminate or significantly reduce competition on routes where CO and current Star members provide "the only or almost all of the competitive alternatives" and remove previously imposed protections designed to preserve competition on overlap routes," likely resulting in "substantial" harm to consumers.

DOJ estimated that fares "are likely to increase by roughly 15% on routes where the number of nonstop competitors decreases from two to one, and by roughly 6% on routes where the number of nonstop competitors decreases from three to two."

The department noted that CO and UA are the only two US carriers currently offering nonstop service to Beijing from the US mainland, accounting for a combined 57% of the available nonstop seats to Beijing, and the only US carriers providing US mainland-Hong Kong nonstop service. DOJ also believes the proposed agreements "pose harm to domestic competition" where UA and CO have agreed to enter into a marketing relationship.

It said that previous ATI granted to the major airline alliances typically was a quid pro quo for open skies agreements with the US. Granting CO ATI in Star and Atlantic++ will not further the goal of open skies because the relevant agreements already are in place, it argued.

La concurrence serait remise en question sur trop de lignes. Le Département américain de la Justice (DoJ) a
refusé que Continental Airlines profite de l’immunité antitrust que lui procurerait son entrée dans Star Alliance. Celle-ci avait pourtant été approuvée par le Département des Transports (DoT).

Selon le DoJ, l’intégration sans condition de Continental dans la couverture pose des problèmes sur plusieurs
lignes transocéaniques et domestiques : elle éliminerait la concurrence entre Continental et United sur les réseaux transpacifique et sud-américain et la diminuerait considérablement vers Pékin.

Elle pourrait également devenir problématique pour les liaisons vers le Canada et New York – Lisbonne, New York – Stockholm, Chicago – Francfort et Washington – Francfort.

Continental et les membres de Star Alliance continuent cependant de croire à l’intégration de la compagnie américaine. Ils devraient présenter une nouvelle demande retravaillée et intégrant des conditions répondant aux objections du DoJ.
Continental doit quitter SkyTeam pour intégrer Star Alliance le 24 octobre.

Continental Airlines pourra rejoindre Star Alliance

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Le gouvernement américain a accordé une dérogation aux règles de la concurrence à Continental Airlines pour qu'elle puisse rejoindre United Airlines au sein de Star Alliance.
Cette décision s'inscrit en droite ligne d'une décision provisoire rendue en avril.
US Airways, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Air China et Thai Airways font partie, comme près d'une vingtaine d'autres compagnies aériennes, de Star Alliance.
La dérogation accordée vendredi permet aux membres d'une alliance d'optimiser leur chiffre d'affaires en regroupant des aspects cruciaux de leurs activités au sein d'une seule entité. Cette pratique est théoriquement interdite par la loi antitrust.
Star Alliance a été créée en 1997 et représente 17.000 départs quotidiens vers 160 pays.
Le texte, signé par Christa Fornarotto, secrétaire adjoint par intérim aux Transports, accorde une dérogation pour certains trajets vers le Canada et vers Pékin.
"Le partenariat, ainsi que l'alliance dans son ensemble, vont créer d'importantes options de services et des avantages tarifaires pour le consommateur", écrit le département des Transports.

PALM SPRINGS -- Continental Airlines is set to introduce its first newly configured Boeing 777-200ER with its BusinessFirst flat-bed seat by the end of October.

Brian Roland, engineering project manager for Continental Airlines, says 777 Ship 13 ( N78013), which is currently being modfied, will be the first to feature the new 50-seat business class cabin.

Each BusinessFirst seat will feature a Panasonic designed eXport jack, allowing passengers to play content stored on Apple iPods and iPhones on the seat back screen.

Panasonic announced today at the World Airline Entertainment Association Conference and Exposition that it is partnering with Apple accessory maker Griffin to offer the eXport in-flight video cable in retail stores. Previously, the Panasonic cable was only available to passengers as property of the airlines.

In addition to Continental, Panasonic has secured about a dozen customers for the eXport jack system, including Singapore Airlines, Avianca, Swiss International Airlines and United Airlines.

The seat, which is made by B/E Aerospace, features a full 180-degree, 6'6" (198.1 cm) lie-flat seat, as well as Panasonic IFE system with hand controller and US compatible power plug.

The airline also plans to feature introduce the flat-bed seat on its Boeing 787 aircraft, along with its existing 767-400ER, 767-200 and 757-200 fleets.

The installation of the new seats on the 777-200ER fleet is expected to be completed by August 2011, with the existing fleet a year later.

Continental operates a fleet of 20 777s and holds orders for an additional eight.

feu vert de Washington à la fusion géante United-Continental

Washington a annoncé vendredi avoir donné son feu vert à la fusion entre United Airlines et Continental Airlines, les deux compagnies aériennes indiquant vouloir sceller d'ici au 1er octobre leur rapprochement pour donner naissance au premier transporteur aérien mondial.Le ministère de la Justice a indiqué que les deux compagnies américaines avaient répondu à ses objections à leur fusion en abandonnant un certain nombre de créneaux d'atterrissage et de décollage à l'aéroport international de Newark, près de New York.Le ministère, qui est chargé de veiller au respect de la concurrence, a ajouté avoir refermé en conséquence son enquête sur la fusion entre les deux entreprises, ce qui donne à celles-ci le champ libre.Dans un communiqué commun publié peu après la décision du ministère, United et Continental, qui avaient obtenu le feu vert des autorités de la concurrence européenne fin juillet, ont annoncé qu'elles comptaient mener à bien leur rapprochement d'ici au 1er octobre.United Airlines, troisième compagnie américaine, et Continental Airlines quatrième, avaient annoncé en mai leur intention de fusionner sous le seul nom de United.Ensemble, elles desserviront 370 destinations dans 59 pays, avec un chiffre d'affaires cumulé de 29 milliards de dollars, une flotte de près de 700 appareils et environ 87.000 salariés dans le monde.
