IHI Corp., which has a 70 percent share of Japan’s jet engine parts market, has begun slashing output of components for Airbus SAS and Boeing Co. as airlines delay orders due to the financial crisis.
Output of parts for the V2500 engine in Airbus’s A320 and the GEnx unit used in Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner “has to be reduced” to trim inventories, said Tsugio Mitsuoka, general manager of IHI’s civil-engine operations, in an interview with Bloomberg News last week.
IHI made components for 354 V2500 engines in the fiscal year ended March 31, down from a planned 400. The company plans to produce parts for about 327 engines this business year, according to Mitsuoka.
IHI has been making parts since 2007 for the Boeing 787 GEnx engines ordered by Japan Airlines Corp. Deliveries to JAL of the first 787 with the engines have been postponed until early next year, about two years behind schedule, forcing IHI to slash output. The GEnx was co-developed by IHI and General Electric Co.
“It may take airplane industries five years to digest their inventories and return to where they used to be,” said Yasuhiro Matsumoto, senior analyst at Shinsei Securities Co. in Tokyo. “If the reduction in production continues, it may have an effect on engine development budgets.”
Tokyo-based IHI halted its plans last year to revamp its production line at its factory in Fukushima prefecture, north of Tokyo. The company is delaying for as much as four years capital investments aimed at boosting production.
