GE Aviation is developing a next-generation regional jet engine to replace the CF34 that could be ready for a 2016 EIS, according to GM-Regional and Large Business Aviation Chuck Nugent.
Briefing reporters at the Regional Airline Assn. Annual Convention in Nashville, Nugent said the "NG34" engine would feature an "e-Core" similar to that on the CFM Leap-X; a 10-stage High Pressure Compressor with a 22:1 pressure ratio; a composite fan case; wide chord fan technology based on the GEnx engine; a TAPPS II combustor; and "next-generation" High Pressure Turbine blade material.
The NG34 will contain much of the "same technology that we're putting into the Leap-X," Nugent said. Given that the Leap-X has been chosen for the Airbus A320neo and COMAC C919 (ATW Daily News, Dec. 1, 2010), "we feel pretty good about the technology suite we're developing for our next generation regional jet engine," Nugent commented.
He conceded that "without having a specific aircraft that this engine is on," the ability to market it is "somewhat limited" at this point. "On the other hand, there's a lot of interest in the capabilities that we have" to develop a new regional jet engine, Nugent explained. "We continue to be positioned so that we could deliver an NG34 in the 2016 timeframe or later."
