Sumitomo Corp. plans to merge its aviation divisions with recently acquired RBS Aviation Capital to create one of the world's top plane-leasing operations, furthering consolidation in the fast-growing airplane-leasing industry. The Japanese company's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. unit in June acquired RBS Aviation, with a fleet of 203 airliners, for $7.3 billion from Royal Bank of Scotland Group
PLC and renamed the operation SMBC Aviation Capital. Sumitomo on Monday plans to announce that it will increase the unit's fleet size to 331 planes by combining it with existing Sumitomo lessors. The move will make SMBC Aviation the world's fourth-largest plane lessor, according to London-based aviation consultant Ascend, and lift it above several rivals that have fleets of around 200 planes each.

. Mitsubishi UFJ Lease & Finance Co. this month said it would buy San Francisco's Jackson Square Aviation
LLC for $1.3 billion. A year ago Singapore's sovereign-wealth fund invested $300 million in Irish lessor Avolon Aerospace Leasing Ltd. And Singapore-based BOC Aviation has been expanding steadily since it was acquired by the Bank of China Ltd. in 2006.
