EasyJet se réorganise pour son avenir à long terme. Sans être en difficulté, la low-cost britannique a décidé le 3 septembre de réduire de 20% son programme de vols depuis sa base de Londres Luton et de fermer celle d’East Midlands.

En ce qui concerne Londres Luton, easyJet a constaté une augmentation de ses coûts de 25% sur les trois dernières années qui nuit à la compétitivité de sa base. Toutefois, la desserte de Londres est trop critique pour être complètement abandonnée.

Ce n’est en revanche pas le cas pour East Midlands. Selon la low-cost, celle-ci stagne. Elle compte toujours trois appareils sur cette base depuis plusieurs années et n’entrevoit aucune possibilité de croissance à long terme. Elle préfère donc se recentrer sur des marchés à plus haute priorité, où les perspectives sont meilleures.

EasyJet n’a également pas manqué de déplorer la hausse de la taxe APD (Air Passenger Duty) qui nuit gravement à la santé des aéroports britanniques, particulièrement à celle des plateformes régionales.

EasyJet transported 4.4 million passengers in September, up 5.3% year-over-year, while load factor rose 1.2 points to 88.1%.

EasyJet reported net income of £71.2 million ($119.2 million) for its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, down 14.4% from £83.2 million for the prior fiscal year, a performance that CEO Andy Harrison called "extremely resilient" given that the year encompassed "12 recessionary months."

In a statement, the carrier added, "We have strengthened the fundamentals of the business with improvements in network quality, lower cost deals with key suppliers and enhancements to easyJet.com, giving easyJet a great platform for profitable growth."

It noted that during the fiscal year, 28 "underperforming routes" were eliminated while 70 new routes were launched. Despite the route additions, the LCC's number of seats flown rose just 1.8% during the year as it cut capacity on weak routes, "optimizing" its network.

It also got a boost from ancillary revenue, which lifted 38% to £9.77 per seat for FY2008-09 compared to the previous year. It earned £1.73 extra per seat on bag check charges as well.

Harrison warned that "we see a tough winter ahead" but predicted that the airline will "make substantial profit improvement" in FY2009-10 if fuel prices and exchange rates remain constant.

Fiscal-year revenue increased 13.1% to £2.67 billion while costs heightened 17% to £2.62 billion, producing an operating profit of £60.1 million, down 34% from £91 million in the prior year. Traffic grew 6% to 50.57 billion RPKs as capacity lifted 4.4% to 58.17 billon ASKs, producing a load factor of 85.5%, up 1.4 points. RASK rose 8.1% to 4.58 pence while CASK decreased 12.1% to 4.51 pence. CASK excluding fuel lowered 13.6% to 3.12 pence.

La compagnie aérienne EasyJet change de président, départ de son directeur général

La compagnie aérienne britannique à bas coût EasyJet a annoncé mercredi le remplacement de son président David Michels par Michael Rake à partir du 1er janvier, et le départ au 30 juin de son directeur général Andy Harrison qui souhaite affronter "de nouveaux défis".
M. Michels reprendra au 1er janvier son rôle de premier administrateur indépendant.
M. Rake était entré au conseil d'administration d'EasyJet en juin comme vice-président et premier administrateur indépendant.
Le groupe estime dans son communiqué publié à la Bourse de Londres "qu'étant donné l'expérience de Sir Michael et de Sir David, ces nominations assureront la poursuite d'une direction forte" à EasyJet.
Par ailleurs, le groupe indique que M. Harrison "a fait part de son désir de quitter la compagnie pour rechercher de nouveaux défis".
En conséquence, le conseil d'administration a accepté qu'il demeure dans ses fonctions jusqu'au 30 juin 2010, date à laquelle il est prévu qu'il quitte le conseil d'administration et l'entreprise. La définition de son emploi a été amendée de telle sorte que la transition soit "tranquille", remarque EasyJet.
Toute l'équipe dirigeante va ainsi se trouver renouvelée en l'espace d'un an, avec le départ aussi l'an dernier du directeur financier Jeff Carr.
L'appointement de Sir David Michels avait lui-même suivi le départ au 1er juillet de l'ancien président Colin Chandler. L'annonce de l'arrivée de M. Rake avait été faite le jour de celle du départ de M. Chandler. M. Rake est actuellement président de BT et ancien président de KPMG.

CONFIDENTIEL : Easyjet pourrait proposer un tarif Premium

Encore dans les cartons, l’idée d’un tarif «premium», à l’image des classes proposées par les compagnies régulières, serait à l’étude chez Easyjet. Objectif : poursuivre l'implantation de la compagnie dans les entreprises.

De plus en plus utilisé pour les voyages d’un jour ou deux par les entreprises, Easyjet veut offrir des avantages à ses clients en leur proposant une classe tarifaire réservée à l’avant de l’appareil. Si l’on ne sait pas encore si la configuration des sièges sera modifiée, il semble acquis que l’embarquement et le débarquement prioritaire soit prévus d'emblée, tout comme la procédure d’enregistrement sans bagage ultra rapide et prioritaire. Parmi les pistes étudiés : la fourniture d’une boisson ou d’un sandwich à bord ainsi que la présence de prises électriques pour l’alimentation des portables. Les lignes vers Nice et Toulouse, au départ de Paris, pourraient être concernées par cette nouvelle classe.

EasyJet and easyGroup reached agreement over the terms of the ‘easyJet’ brand license, resolving a 2-yr. brand dispute and ending litigation in the UK High Court.

EasyJet will retain worldwide rights to the use of its name but will pay airline founder and easyGroup Chairman Stelios Haji-Ioannou an annual royalty of 0.25% of its revenues. The rights will continue for a 50-yr. term, with a minimum commitment of 10 years. The payment is capped at £3.9 million ($6.2 million) and £4.95 million for the first and second year of the agreement, respectively. In return, Haji-Iannou, easyJet's largest shareholder with a 38% stake, agreed to give up the right to appoint himself as the airline's chairman.

“This is a sensible resolution of a difficult dispute that provides a fair, clear, workable outcome that is an improvement for both sides. It provides easyJet with operational flexibility and commercial freedom to grow our business and it provides both sides with clarity,” easyJet CEO Carolyn McCall said (ATW Daily News, March 25).

Haji-Ioannou said he “hopes” the airline’s new management and chairman will use the “expanded scope of the brand license to create value for all shareholders. The way low-cost airlines make money has changed over the 10 years since the original license was signed. This amendment allows the airline to now grow its business even further by removing some of the restrictions imposed by the original agreement. I am content this is a fair deal for both sides.”

Under the terms of the agreement, easyJet will have the freedom to enter new co-branding agreements with other travel service providers as well as white label partners such as car rental, hotels and travel insurance companies. In addition, it may enter co-branding promotions with aviation partners, airports and reputable consumer brands without prior consent of easyGroup. It also will be able to wetlease within limits for operational purposes without permission of easyGroup, which is prohibited from using the easyGroup name (or a derivative) to brand another airline in Europe for five years.

The agreement requires approval from shareholders, who will vote on it during the fourth quarter.
