Czech military may buy four C-295M transport aircraft

12:43 GMT, April 20, 2009 PRAGUE | The Czech Defense Ministry says last week that it will propose that its
government buy four Casa C-295M transport aircraft developed by EADS CASA, the Spanish units of European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co.

According to a previous announced agreement, Prague will pay for three of the planes and receive the fourth in exchange for five L-159 ALCA jets it no longer needs.

The C-295M will replace the four ageing Soviet-era An-26 aircraft by 2011.

Last year the Czech Defence Ministry and the EADS company signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which also includes stipulations that the Czech Republic is interested in another two aircraft of this type.

Le 7 juin, un C295 équipé d’un rotodôme Airbone Early Warning and Command (AEW&C) a effectué son vol inaugural. Il s’est envolé depuis les installations d’Airbus Military de Séville en Espagne.

L’objectif du vol, d’une durée de 2h48, était de vérifier les principes aérodynamiques, les impacts structurels et la manœuvrabilité du C295 avec un rotodôme.

L’antenne rotative de six mètres de diamètre doit pouvoir couvrir à 360 degrés une zone donnée. Des vols continueront pendant les trois prochains mois afin de valider le concept et d’approfondir les études de faisabilité.

Airbus Military's first C-295 development aircraft fitted with an airborne early warning and control system rotodome completed its first modified flight of 2h 48min on 7 June from the company's San Pablo site near Seville.
The objective of the trials is to verify the aerodynamic and structural impact of the in-house developed rotodome on the aircraft's overall structure, handling qualities and performance. The 6m (20ft)-diameter rotodome fitted for the initial trials is a fixed dummy structure.

Flight testing will continue in the next three months to complete the feasibility study and fully validate the concept.

Un petit peu plus de détail sur les évolutions :

- Version tanker (6000 kg de fuel / 7500 l) en kit paletisé... intéressant pour les hélico
- Version bombardier d'eau
- Version VIP (4-6 VIP / 18-22 Non VIP)
- High power plant rating, pour les andes ou l'hymalaya. Application de la puissance TOGA pendant la montée et MAX climb pendant la croisière initiale. Développement fait avec PW, qui ne devrait pas avoir trop d'incidence sur la maintenance moteur. Gain de cU à 25000 feet (7620 m) : 1.7 t !!
- Les wingtip extensions !!!

Airbus Military's C295 has been flown for the first time carrying an anti-ship missile, as the manufacturer looks to broaden the type's versatility for maritime patrol tasks.

Pictured carrying an instrumented test example of MBDA's 310kg (683lb) Marte Mk2/S weapon beneath its wing, the development aircraft will go on to perform "handling qualities tests and aircraft flight performance tests", Airbus Military says. The activity is being conducted under a joint effort between the airframer and missile producer.

C'est à priori la version la plus puissante du PW127 ... donc cette augmentation de puissance va pouvoir descendre vers les ATR également moins gourmands en puissance brute

J'ai aussi noté que c'est Airbus qui est en charge des appros "Moteurs" pour ATR, chez Bombardier !

Also in his presentation, Tentor announced that his company is
developing a new version of its highly successful C295 aircraft, the
C295W. This version is fitted with winglets (hence the "W" suffix) and
has engine enhancements, developed in cooperation with engine
manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.

The winglets add 90 kg in weight to the aircraft – 30 kg for each
winglet and 30 kg for wing strengthening. The new version requires the
strengthening of certain wing spars and thicker upper panels for the
central and outer wings. In return, however, the aircraft gains
significantly improved performance in taking off and landing at hot and
high airfields, or greater range and endurance if operating from lower,
cooler bases.

Flight trials of the prototype C295W concluded this month. The next
steps in the programme are the detailed design of the production
version, certification, industrialization and introduction into service.
Marketing of the new version has started, certification flights should
be completed by early next year with certification itself achieved
during the second quarter. The C295W will become the standard production
version of the aircraft from the fourth quarter of next year.

Paul je comparais cet engin au C27 ... ce n'est pas tout à fait la même catégorie, le C295 est plus simple, mais adapté à pas mal de missions

A voir ce que les modifs apportées vont donner en terme d'allong et d'endurance

je crois qu'au Canada ils ont préféré le C-27 pour sa communalité avec le C-130J (même moteur, même avioniques et même cockpit).

Ce n'est pas tout à fait la même catégorie ... comme dit Poncho !
Le Spartan pèse plus, va un peu plus loin avec plus et du plus gros fret , et consomme plus .... !
Aprés, les équipements, les missions et les choix ....

C'est quand même similaire et les deux appareils s'adressent à la même clientèle.

Flight testing already performed using winglets as part of
risk-reduction work for a proposed airborne early warning and control
system variant of the C295 also demonstrated an average 4% reduction in
fuel consumption, says Gustavo Garcia Miranda, Airbus Military's head of
market development. The proposed surveillance version of the aircraft
would have a maximum altitude of 26,000ft (7,930m) and an almost 9h
endurance with the winglets installed, he adds.

Commercial activities linked to the C295W will be launched before the
end of May 2013, following the completion of an analysis of handling
qualities linked to a preliminary design. A design freeze is expected
during September, and certification from Spain's INTA airworthiness
authority is being targeted for the second quarter of 2014.

Airbus Military displayed a winglet-equipped C295W demonstrator at its San Pablo final assembly site in Seville,
Spain on 29 May. The airframe modification will also be available as a
retrofit option for existing operators, the company says.

Ca peut se jouer sur les équipements proposés, les capacités d'emport, le coût de l'heure et la Conso !
