Bonjour tous

A year after British Airways began transatlantic service between London’s downtown city airport and New York, an expansion of the network and its dedicated Airbus fleet is being considered.
A year ago, the airline acquired two new Airbus A318s configured in an all-business class, 32-seat layout specifically for the route between London City and JFK airports. Departing from London City’s short 4,325 ft (1,319 m) runway, the westbound flights operate with a technical stop at Shannon, Ireland, where passengers are able to clear U.S. immigration. Eastbound flights operate direct.
“The London City operation has been running for a year now and performed extremely well, better than we had expected, says CEO Willie Walsh. “There’s scope for expansion, whether that’s through increased frequencies to New York or adding other destinations on the U.S. Eastern seaboard.” While Walsh is not specific on other potential U.S. cities that could be served from London City, Boston is understood to be a leading candidate.
While Walsh acknowledges that any expansion of services would necessitate the addition of more A318s, he says that BA is not currently in talks with Airbus specifically about this. “We’re always talking to Airbus and if were to go looking for more A318s I’m sure Airbus would be pleased to facilitate us.”
The A318 is Airbus’s least successful single-aisle model, with total orders standing at just 83 aircraft. The type recently suffered a blow when Mexicana, which operated 10 A318s, ceased operations. Also, LAN Airlines has decided to phase out its fleet of 15 A318s.
Meanwhile Walsh says that the industry’s trading conditions have improved rapidly in this year, with demand coming back well and yield gains bettering expectations.
However Walsh says that while he sees no evidence of a double-dip recession, confidence remains fragile, which is likely “to slow the pace of the recovery.”
Walsh reiterates that despite two years of record losses, cost cutting efforts are bearing fruit and the airline aims to break-even at a pre-tax level this year
