Belle manœuvre de Boeing
Clark said General Electric has dropped a water injection system for the 777X engine that Emirates would have found useful in desert-heat conditions. Instead, the manufacturer will need to make changes to the maximum thrust coming from the engines to help the plane take off in hot air, which is less dense than colder air and therefore provides less lift.
A spokesman at GE said the company continues to evaluate a water-injection system, and that the engine’s entry into service is several years away.
“The adjustments to the thrust that have to compensate for the lack of water injection and cooling elements have got to be dealt with,” Clark said. “And they are being dealt with.”

We chose to engage in Puget Sound first, but without full acceptance by the union and Legislature, we will be left with no choice but to open up the process competitively and pursue other options for locating the 777X work.”

But the problem (for the unions) is that standardization techniques, QA, training, Six Sigma, etc., are all intended to be able to replicate a skill in just about any location by establishing a minimum threshold. High tech is also becoming the norm, not the exception. Decades ago high tech industries were a form of black art bastions and they were concentrated in a few geographies. Nowadays, college degrees are the norm and cutting edge technologies can be spearheaded just about anywhere with some investment. Long gone are the days when aircraft manufacturing could be done only in one or two locations. Charleston is proof of this new age.
The problem with unions is that they are a relic of the past - a past that no longer exists. They are an anachronism. Strong labor laws have eliminated a lot of the need for a union, such that they are now competing against themselves in an economy that is experiencing 7.8% unemployment and a society that is spitting out educated workers willing to do the job of the union man for a third less than what he is getting paid and a fraction of the benefits. The sooner the IAM members realize this the sooner they can secure their jobs long term in Puget Sound.

SEATTLE, November 13, 2013 - Sixty-seven percent of members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) District 751, District W-24 voted Wednesday to reject the Boeing Company’s offer of an eight-year contract extension that would have expired in 2024.
IAM District 751 Directing Business Representative Tom Wroblewski issued the following statement:
“Today, the democratic process worked and our members made the decision to not accept the company’s proposal. It is my belief that we represent the best aerospace workforce in the world and hope that as a result of this vote Boeing will not discard our skills when looking to place the 777X.
“We preserved something sacred by rejecting the Boeing proposal. We’ve held on to our pensions and that’s big. At a time when financial planners are talking about a ‘retirement crisis’ in America, we have preserved a tool that will help our members retire with more comfort and dignity."
The IAM represents more than 31,000 Boeing workers who are affected by this vote and is among the largest industrial trade unions in North America. For more information on District 751, visit www.iam751.org.
